Innovative Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Removal Technologies: The C-SINK Project
Our day by day / 24-02-2026
At the Fundación ICAMCyL, we actively participate in European initiatives that drive innovation in sustainability and the green transition. One of our key strategic projects in this field is the Proyecto C-SINK, focused on the development and evaluation of innovative Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) removal technologies.
What is C-SINK and why is it key to the climate transition?
C-SINK is a European project that analyses and promotes Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) solutions , technologies designed to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere in a safe, measurable, and sustainable way.
These solutions are essential to achieving the climate neutrality targets set by the European Union, particularly in hard-to-abate industrial sectors where fully eliminating emissions remains technically or economically challenging.
The project focuses on:
- Technical assessment of carbon capture and storage technologies
- Economic and regulatory feasibility analysis
- Development of standardized implementation frameworks
- Environmental and social impact evaluation
CO₂ removal technologies: A key pillar of decarbonisation
Emission reductions alone are no longer sufficient. To effectively limit global warming, mitigation strategies must be complemented by scalable carbon removal solutions capable of addressing residual emissions.
Within the C-SINK framework, the following solutions are being analysed:
- Reforestation
- Biochar
- Artificial soils
- Enhanced weathering
- Microbial carbon fixation
- Biochar with carbon capture and storage
- Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS)
These technologies represent a strategic opportunity for industrial innovation, business competitiveness, and sustainable development across Europe.
ICAMCyL coordinates this project, reinforcing its commitment to:
- Sustainable industrial development
- Circular economy strategies
- Climate innovation
- European research and innovation collaboration
Participation in projects such as C-SINK positions León and the wider Castilla y León region as active contributors to Europe’s transition towards a low-carbon economy.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What are CDR technologies?
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) technologies are technological or nature-based solutions designed to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and contribute to long-term climate neutrality.
Why are they necessary in addition to reducing emissions?
Because certain industrial sectors cannot fully eliminate emissions. CDR technologies help compensate for these residual emissions.
What does the C-SINK project contribute?
It provides a technical, regulatory, and methodological framework to implement reliable and scalable carbon removal solutions across Europe.
What is ICAMCyL’s role?
ICAMCyL coordinates the project and leads the technological and strategic evaluation to foster sustainable innovation.
